About This Item
Lost Worlds by Clark Ashton Smith (author of Out of Space and Time, Genius Loci, The Abomination of Yondo, etc.) Hardcover First UK Edition - First Printing London: Neville Spearman UK, 1971. £1.75 cover price, brown boards inside photographic dust jacket. Contains stories contained in CAS' "worlds" such as Averoigne, Hyperborea, and Zothique.
Originally issued by Arkham House in 1944, a sought-after first edition, among which are "The Outsider and Others" by Lovecraft, "Out of Space and Time" by CAS, "Beyond the Wall of Sleep" by HP Lovecraft, "Skull-Face and Others" by Robert E. Howard, and "The House on the Borderland and Other Novels" by William Hodgson. Fine/Fine copies of the Arkham House edition of "Out of Space and Time" tend to fetch $400+. The texts of this edition are contained in two paperbacks issued by Panther UK during roughly the same period with each paperback often priced at $50+.
PLUS a unique after-market dust jacket created with artwork on the front and back by Bruce Pennington used for the Panther UK editions of the same title which was issued in two volumes. Artwork from the second volume is on the front, and artwork from the first volume is on the back. (The red illustration looked better for the front in my opinion.) The new jacket is a tiny bit larger than the original jacket (the latter still present and underneath). That said every effort has been made for the jacket to fit like the original including flaps with text and the famous photo of Smith to make an overall much more pleasing presentation than the original UK jacket which shows a photographic image of a skull which has little or nothing to do with any of the stories by CAS so far as I know.
Near Fine in Very Good+ only original jacket and Fine as New After-Market Dust Jacket, outwardly a beautiful copy now with the special jacket. The main shortcoming to the book itself is some foxing to the upper edge of the text-block, which is not untypical of UK editions published circa 1970 to 2000, otherwise only slight age-toning to the text-block and a slight rubbing to the top of right-hand corner of the spine, but straight corners and NO bumps. The original jacket has no tears or chips but has lots of rubs to the edges and corners, very typical of this edition. Priced to sell as a unique collectible for CAS fans and collectors!
I have seen some sellers asking $60 to $120 each for copies of the Panther paperback edition. This is a much more fun alternative which will last much longer than vintage paperbacks.
NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers.
ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.)
IMPORTANT NOTE: All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I found the same book at a better price". I am not selling new items to compete with other retailers but collectible books priced in terms of edition, condition, and demand. Returns are only accepted because of discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition of which I try to be very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing ALL condition issues. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one of my items before making a purchase.
USPS Shipping: $6.50 media mail shipping domestic US, or $9.50 priority padded mailer, $16.50 medium priority mail box, or $42.50 padded mailer international. I ship on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays sometimes on Friday. I do not ship on Mondays and Saturdays.
