About This Item
London: Trubner and Co., 1859. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. The very scarce first edition of this novel from popular Victorian author Charles Reade. Not seen at auction since 1982. Reade began his literary career as a dramatist, and he chose to have "dramatist" stand first in the list of his occupations on his tombstone. Complete in two volumes. Bookplate of John Marinteau to front pastedowns. Rebound in green cloth bindings. Externally sound, though bumped, with some marks. Hinges of volume II strained. Internally, binding slightly strained. Library label to front pastedown of volume II. Pages are bright and clean to volume I, but with some spotting to volume II. Good
