The majority of the book deals with experiences of the First World War covering people of the infantry, field artillery and field engineer units; on fronts as varied as Flanders to Gallipoli, Salonica to the Carpathions, and Egypt to Palestine. These accounts have been augmented and supplemented with diaries, letters, and photographs, and war diaries of their battalions, batteries, brigades and divisions and, from newspapers, memoirs, and campaign accounts and regimental histories.
