About This Item
[Lugduni (Lyon)]: [Sebastian Gryphius]. Collectible-Very Good/NO DUSTJACKET. [1544]. LeatherBound. This is the Declamationum Liber, or part two (complete) of Quintilian's Institutionum Oratoriarum Libri XII and though it has it's own title page and pagination, there is no publisher indicia; that was printed only in part 1. The final page is a woodcut of Gryphius' trademark griffin printer's device. Gryphius issued ten editions of Quintilian, all between 1531 and 1575. We feel that this edition was issued between 1540 and 1549. Bound in a later 18th century style full calf with 6 compartments of raised bands, gilt, red leather label. Hinges neatly mended else a very good copy with fine printing of the text in Latin. Bookplate of lawyer, scholar, Greek translator and editor of the Chicago Tribune - Horace White (1834-1916). All editions of Gryphis' Quintilian are uncommon. Marcus Fabiuis Quintilianus (35 ca. - 96) was a noted Rhetorican from Hispania. This is book 2 of his famous work Institutio oratoria in 12 books. "The first two books contain his general observations on educational principles and are notable for their good sense and insight into human nature" - Britannica . Sm 8vo., 247 pp. (1), Later (18th. century?) binding with 6 compartments with raised bands. Hinges mended. .
