About This Item

1575 Flaccus Latin Dictionary Festus Palazzo Farnese ROME Mythology gods RARE

Verrius Flaccus was a 1st century Roman grammarian who published the very first alphabetical Latin dictionary. This work was notable for becoming the basis for Sextus Pompeius Festus's 'Lexicon', a work that was edited and compiled sometime during the 2nd century. This work is a collection of Latin words in which Flaccus and Festus provide the etymology of words, definitions, use in language, and references in Roman mythology.

This 1575 edition was edited by French scholar Joseph Scaliger. Scaliger includes commentary on notes on various lesser Roman gods as well as commentary on the orations of Cicero.
