Includes Frederick the Great's "Eulogy" on La Mettrie and Extracts from La Mettrie's "The Natural History of the Soul". Philosophical and historical notes by Gertrude Carman Bussey. Clean cover designed by Friso Henstra, edges worn all around cover, no creases; soundly bound, square, Black mark on bottom edge of page block. A few pages with notes written by text, otherwise quite clean, no creases. The French text in this volume is taken from a Leyden edition of 1748. The translation of this work, which is also included in this volume, is the work of several hands. It is founded on a version made by Gertrude Bussey and has been revised by Professor Calkins. This is La Mettrie's chief philosophical work, the best known 18th century statement of mechanistic materialism. 216 with index of names and titles. 5.2 x 8 inches.
