His research helped to define - and continues to enrich - the area of American studies concerned with the links between scientific and technological advances, and the way society and culture both determine these links. The machine in the Garden fully examines the differences between the 'pastoral' and 'progressive' ideals that characterized early 19th-century American culture, and which ultimately evolved into the basis for many of the environmental and nuclear debates of contemporary society.

I discovered this book as an American Studies student in the early 70's. It explains in detail the decline of the quality of life in America as technology and the loss of the centralized family lost grounds with the coming of heavy industry. A prophetic book in its time - I as a college librarian I frequently recommend it to those who want to understand this aspect of lifestyle in the USA and in emerging Third World cultures.
