After tracing the tradition of hermits, the author describes the life of James Lucas, a wealthy landowner who lived barricaded inside his house in Hertfordshire for over 25 years, and became a celebrated and abused figure in Victorian society, arguing with any callers, including Dickens who wrote a critical article on him. The author cites medical opinion on his condition. Very Good in Very Good jacket. Some light browning to endpapers and closed page edges, jacket yellowed to white with some spotting. Pictures available.
