Binding a little shaken, with splits to gutters on either side of the gatherings (groups of 8 leaves) at pages 129-144 and 145-160. Gutters starting at hinges. Overall quite a tidy copy.; No date (Preface dated 1870). 576 pages. Blue-green cloth boards with gilt lettering and illustration on spine and front board. Page dimensions: 183 x 122mm. Frontispiece and other illustrations (some full page) accounted for within the pagination. 1 full page map of Madagascar (page 16). "In writing this book my object has been to describe, in popular form, what is known respecting Madagascar, - its physical aspects, its animal and vegetable life, its people - their habits, language, and religious beliefs." - from the Preface. .
