About This Item

London: Sprague & Co, 1898. Thin octavo (13 x 19 cm.), 41, [2] pages. Illustrated with photographic illustrations (Funchal Bay from Reid's New Hotel, Reid's Hotel, Carmo Garden), plus two unindexed black & white folding maps (Island of Madeira; Skeleton Plan of Funchal). Stated "Third Issue". The Preface, dated 1 December 1891, states that this issue preserves the form and arrangement of the former, limiting revisions to Steamer changes and variations in rates. A guide to the island of Madeira, focused on the several hotels owned by the Reids (Carmo, Hortas, Santa Clara, Royal Edinburgh, Reid's New Hotel, Sant Anna). A list of their guests includes several HRHs, Earls, Lords, Viscounts, Admirals, Colonels, Counts, Barons, Marquises, parliamentarians, specifically the Comtesse Diodati, Sir Richard Burton, Major Wissmann, and W.K. Vandebilt. Several pages include revisions, pasted down to leaves, such as specific steamer schedules. Browning to a few pages. Ink ownership inscription to preliminary blank; and a few in annotations to margins.
