About This Item

1877. Early days in Dane County, Wisconsin, including the City of Madison, WI, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales, factual data and numerous personal biographies in this new 8 1/2" x 11" spiral-bound book. The tri-colored front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. The information is an excerpt from a rare 1877 book, entitled Madison, Dane County and Surrounding Towns, Being a History and Guide. The book, printed on 60# opaque paper, contains 168 pages. However, because we have used a 4-up format on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, it contains over 600 pages of information from the original book. The book begins with an extensive history of the Madison, the capital of Wisconsin. Other subjects follow, including Mounds, Cave and Relics; a small map of the county showing the townships; a history of the county; Individual Town/Township Histories for Medina, Blue Mounds, Windsor, Berry, Cottage Grove, Albion, Perry, Westport, Waunakee, Springdale, Sun Prairie, Springfield, Stoughton, Christiana, Cambridge, Pleasant Springs Bristol, Rutland, Burke, Deerfield, Cross Plains, Fitchburg, Dane, Montrose, Dunn, Roxbury, Oregon, Black Earth, Primrose, Blooming Grove, Madison, Vienna, York, Verona, Vermont, Middleton, and Mazomanie; a section on adjacent towns -- Evansville in Rock County, Lake Koshkonong, principally in Jefferson County, Brooklyn in Green County, Lodi in Columbia County, and Edgerton on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad; a list of Dane County Officers from 1839 to 1877; a list of Madison city officials; and about a dozen advertisements. The book is illustrated with delightful line drawings, including a view of the city, Mrs. Eben Peck, Lake Monona, King Street, the first house in Madison, Simeon Mills, Wisconsin State University, Lyman C. Draper, the Congregational Church, David Atwood, Wisconsin State Journal Block on Washington Ave., Dan K. Tenney, Wisconsin State Capital, City Hall, Park Hotel, Madison City High School, Residence of Dr. J.B. Bowen, Rosebark Cottage, Angleworm Station, Marietta, the Old Dane County Courthouse, an Indian camp, Albion Academy, and the Opera House and Wagon & Carriage Works at Stoughton, Although the book does not include a biographical section, many names are mentioned throughout. . Limited Edition Reprint. Spiral/Comb. New/No Jacket. 8.5" x 11".
