Madman's Drum: A Novel in Woodcuts

by Lynd Ward

Here on offer is a very nice copy of Lynd Ward's second wordless novel, Madman's Drum. Told in woodcut images, it is the story of a slave trader, his heinous crime, and the consequences for him and his family, . This copy is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing of the work published by Cape and Smith in 1930. The dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Mylar sleeve.

****************************************************************************************************************************

"Madman's Drum is a wordless novel by American artist Lynd Ward (1905–1985), published in 1930. It is the second of Ward's six wordless novels. The 118 wood-engraved images of Madman's Drum tell the story of a slave trader who steals a demon-faced drum from an African he murders, and the consequences for him and his family.

Ward's first wordless novel was Gods' Man of 1929. Ward was more ambitious with his second work in the medium: the characters are more nuanced, the plot more developed and complicated, and the outrage at social injustice more explicit. Ward used a wider variety of carving tools to achieve a finer degree of detail in the artwork, and was expressive in his use of symbolism and exaggerated emotional facial expressions.

The book was well received upon release, and the success of Ward's first two wordless novels encouraged publishers to publish more books in the genre. In 1943 psychologist Henry Murray used two images from the work in his Thematic Apperception Test of personality traits. . . . "
______________________________________________________________________________________

"The Lynd Ward of 'Gods' Man' has created even greater beauty in this second book, and the pictures themselves are alive with interpretation. There are no words used whatsoever, . . .

The story is, briefly, as follows. A sea-faring getnleman, having completed the accumulation of a fortune, is enabled thereby to satisfy two ambitions: first, to establish his wife in a home befitting great wealth; second, to direct his son in the first steps towards what he desires shall be a life of purely intellectual interests. From that point on the story is concerned with the fifty odd years fo the son's active life. His purely intellectual interest in life first places him in a world quite removed from that of his fellow villagers and finally brings that world tumbling about his head in disaster.

But no description of the story can do justice to the magic and power of Mr. Ward's wood-cuts. One must turn each page slowly and absorb all the details over which the artist has labored to appreciate this book."

The above text was taken from, respectively, Wikipedia and the dust jacket summation of the book.

This handsome copy would be a worthy addendum to your 1st editions library.

Chatto & Windus, London, 1934. Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first English-language edition. 8vo. 295pp. Brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gilt decoration. Cloth a little spotted and with just a trace of wear to several extremities. A touch of spotting to the endpapers and browning to a blank preliminary and concluding leaf, and the publisher's top edge stain just a little patchy. Really quite a nice, crisp copy, lacking the uncommon dust wrapper. The basis for John Huston's magnificent Bogart movie, this Creighton translation precedes Traven's own translation which he produced for the American issue (Knopf, 1935 - the author is on record stating his preference for this version)..

Description:
New York : Jonathan Cape Harrison Smith, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. 8vo. Lynd Ward. Madman's Drum is the author's second of six wordless novels. In art deco style, Ward uses woodcut illustrations only to tell the story of tragedy and ultimate insanity that befalls a slave trader after stealing a demon-faced drum from Africa. Ward's best-known books are his first wordless novel, "God's Man", and his children's story, "The Biggest Bear", for which he won a Caldecott for this children's story. It is said that Ward's wordless novels had a great influence on the development of the graphic novel. Ward was a son of a Methodist minister and political organizer / radical social activist Harry F. Ward, the first chairman of the ACLU when it was founded in 1920. (Wikipedia). Boards are covered in a printed paper depicting repeated African mask-like characters, stars and mountains in black and off white. Black cloth spine bears an illustrated… Read More
