Scarce collection of hand-colored costume plates, with only one or two copies appearing on OCLC First Search -- not including a reprint, in a different format, from a century later. Folio. 29 by 22 cm. With 30 hand-colored lithographs of Moravian costume. Plates tipped onto comtemporary gouache mounts, with gilt borders. Printed captions pasted on verso of mounts. This copy was owned by Volkskunsthaus Wallach in Munich, which was an important privately owned museum, closed since 19---. The museum specialized in textile design and trachten and traditional folk costume. It was essentially an extension of a handicraft and trachten business begun by two brothers, Julius and Moritz Wallach, in 1900. Some of the objects owned and displayed by this museum were the basis for an exhibit at the Jewish Museum of Munich. The exhibit was called, "Dirndls, Trunks and Edelweiss: The Folk Art of the Wallach Brothers." Only other institutional copy that credibly exists is at Morgan. Copy showing at Kunstbibliothek Staatsliche Museen zu Berlin references Mellon, the original owner of the copy at the Morgan, and so we suspect this is not an actual physical copy. Regardless, the collection of plates in their original form is unquestionable rare. Condition: gouache worn from several margins. Wrap folder with moderate soiling, and a number of chips, mostly along the fold or spine. This fold has been reinforced with a band of white tape inside. Dedication page with light foxing and a corner dampstain. The outer folder with heavy-ish wear by spine, and considerable wear and soiling of the paper pastedown. Remnants of a stamp (ownership stamp?) on the cloth by spine. The plates remain attractive.
