A deluxe Franklin Library leatherbound edition offering two collections of short stories by New York City's Bernard Malamud. "The Magic Barrel," containing 13 stories, won the National Book Award for fiction in 1959. "Idiots First" offers twelve stories. With illustrations by Bert Silverman. Includes a drawn portrait of the author by Walter Rane near front of volume. Issued as an entry in the publisher's Collected Stories of the World's Greatest Writers series. One of an unspecified number in this limited edition. --- Bound in full brown bonded leather covers with three raised bands on spine. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges all in bright gilt. Text presented on high-quality papers. Orange silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Synopsis
Bernard Malamud was an author of novels and short stories. His novel, The Magic Barrel, won the National Book Award in 1959. The novel is comprised of thirteen stories, most taking place in dingy streets in New York, and others in Italy. The book has been recognized as a classic from the time in which it was published. The stories tell of matchmakers, rabbis, egg candlers, struggle and delights while blending urban realism and Yiddish idioms in a wonderfully artistic fashion. The author’s warmth and ironic humor make the stories universally appealing and unique. The stories included are The First Seven Years, The Mourners, The Girl of My Dreams, Angel Levine, Behold the Key, Take Pity, The Prison, The Lady of the Lake, A Summer's Reading, The Bill, The Last Mohican, The Loan, and The Magic Barrel.
