About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First Edition . Cloth. Very Good Plus/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First Edition [in later bookclub dustjacket]. Octavo, 617 pp. Pictorial jacket; publisher's original quarter purple cloth with gray textured cloth boards. Faint fading at board edges, under close inspection a light crease to spine, a couple of small spots of soiling at page edges. Better than VG+, very close to NF. Jacket - which is the World Books jacket, from their 1967 BCE - is also NF, showing very minor peripheral wear and a few words in ballpen on the inside front flap. Fowles' second - and some say finest - novel, one which expands and develops thematic traces started in The Collector and which stands on it own as a complex literary achievement of woven historical allusion, philosophical exploration and spiritual questioning by one of the few modern-day writers capable of such. As always, please feel free to ask questions or request additional scans. L6

Synopsis

This daring literary thriller, rich with eroticism and suspense, is one of John Fowles's best-loved and bestselling novels and has contributed significantly to his international reputation as a writer of the first degree. At the center of The Magus is Nicholas Urfe, a young Englishman who accepts a teaching position on a remote Greek island, where he befriends a local millionaire. The friendship soon evolves into a deadly game, in which reality and fantasy are deliberately manipulated, and Nicholas finds that he must fight not only for his sanity but for his very survival.
