The word 'maharaja' - literally 'great king' - conjures up a vision of splendour and magnificence. This book examines the real and perceived worlds of the maharaja from the early eighteenth century to 1947, when the Indian Princes ceded their territories into the modern states of India and Pakistan. Published to accompany the exhibition Maharaja held at the V & A, 10th Oct. 2009-17th Jan. 2010. 240 pages : color illustrations, maps ; 32 cm. First edition, first printing. White boards, price-clipped dust jacket (now in a removable protective sleeve). Slight shelf wear to edges, small closed tear to head of spine, no inscriptions, tight and square binding.
