Conobbe Gaugin e, dopo alcune esperienze nell'arte decorativa, inizia a dedicarsi quasi completamente alla produzione plastica. Intanto stringe amicizia col gruppo dei Nabis e in seguito conosce Picasso. Le sue sculture sono volumi massicci, ma distesi, individuati dalle semplici figure femminili, cosi' abbondantemente presenti nella sua produzione.
