The first edition of this study of those who made Venice into the influential city that it is today, giving brief biographies on the important men in the history of the city. The work of Margaret Oliphant, a Scottish novelist known for her historical and supernatural novels. This is the second work in Oliphant's series regarding various cities and the people who made them famous. Illustrated with a frontispiece, twenty five plates, and vignette illustrations by R. R. Holmes. Collated, complete.In a full calf signed binding by Bickers.With the armorial bookplate of Sir Timothy Calvert Eden - brother of British Prime Minister Anthony Eden - to the front pastedown. With an inscription addressed to Eden to a front blank, remarking on his 'distinction in trials', from 'E.L.C.'. In a full calf signed binding.
