"Summary for the Year 1878. Showing the Extent of the Work." Started in 1872 by Robert Whitaker McAll (1821-1893) an English / Scottish congregationalist minister moved by the plight of Parisian Workers, the "Popular Evangelical Mission of France" was just reaching the peak of its popularity in 1878 including the publication of "The White Fields of France or, The story of Mr. M'All's mission to the workingmen of Paris and Lyons" (1879) by Horatius Bonar. Often criticized for preaching conformity and maintaining a rigid hierarchical structure, it remained in conflict with Christian Socialists.

By 1878 it was running 13, 374 pray meetings attended by nearly half a million adults. It had 45 five stations in Paris, 8 in Lyon, 2 in Bordeaux, and 1 about to open in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
