Warsaw, Poland: Smithsonian Belgrade, 1976. Translated from Polish for the Smithsonian and NSF by Panstwowe Wydwnictwo Naukowe, 617pp. "Owing to the fact that the author's personal interests include fossils as well as living mammals, he has tried to view the problems under discussion as much as possible from an evolutionary and historical perspective and has accordingly given equal emphasis to fossils and present-day mammals. From this point of view the book can claim to be original..." The term "theriology," the author explains, "has a long tradition in Polish scientific literature and is also commonly used by zoologists in the USSR instead of the linguistically less correct term 'mammology' which is more common in western literature."
