Colour illustrated frontispiece and the drawings within the text have all been created by Christopher Corr; who, also drew the illustrations for the covers. In this work the author follows a close-knit group of French intellectuals from just after world War to through to the middle of the 1950s. The characters themselves see themselves as ineffectual "Mandarins" and and try to discern, if there is any, role for them in influencing the political landscape of the world after World War II.
