About This Item
London : J M Dent & Co, 1902 A good set in the original decorative cloth bindings, edited by R Brimley Johnson, and with 12 colour plates by H M Brock. 3rd edition thus. The bindings have gilt titles to spine and front board. The top page edges are gilt; the remaining edges are uncut. With half titles, showing that they were volumes V and VI of Brimley Johnson's series; colour frontispieces; decorative title pages; listing of illustrations; and text with head and tailpieces. Volume I has a preface. Vol I 245pp; Vol II 249pp. All the plates are present as called for. Both volumes have some fading to the blue decoration with some browning to board edges and spines. Corners are turned. Both have been rebacked relaying the original spines and are sound and tight. The original decorative endpapers are present, with professional repair at the joints. Vol I has a small bubble to the cloth on the back board. The contents are clean and all the tissue guards to the plates have been replaced. The text paper is lightly toned, particularly towards the edges. There is occasional spotting in both volumes, particularly at the bottom margins and in the text pages around the plates. The plates have a little spotting to the margins but not the image. Vol II has some repaired paper tears to edges - generally where pages have been poorly opened.
