Paris J.P. Aillaud 1850, 1850. Third edition. 12mo (140x85mm). pp xiii, [3], 628. Black full morocco, lavishly decorated in gilt to upper and lower covers. Spine with five raised bands, six compartments decorated in gilt, five with a single flower inside a decorated border, the second with "Missa" tooled in gilt in second compartment. Red doublure decorated in gilt with a cross surrounded by scrolling vine patterns; red washed silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Slight rubbing to hinges and head of spine and some modest wear to corners but overall this is a superb binding, beautifully decorated and in excellent condition. Ffep has a booklabel of the Wigan Free Public Library and some of the pages have the library stamp in blind. A handwritten note on the verso of the ffep reads: "Cat: Bought April 1897, H.J.F (?)". Half title and three further plates are coloured lithographs by V. Jansen of Paris. Black and white engravings throughout. Some foxing but overall, very clean and fresh internally. Text, in Portuguese, contains the Ordinary of the Mass and the Propers for the Sundays and Feast Days together with prayers, devotional texts and readings.
