About This Item

Paris: E. Duchatel, 1907. First edition. Stiff Wraps. Orig. color lithographed cover in yellow, red and black. Near fine. 100 (2) pages. 31.5 x 25.5 cm. Limited edition, one of 300 from edition of 500 (this copy not numbered) on papier du Marais. Index and one page of adverts at rear. 12 full page original lithographs by Mrs. A. Belleroche, Andre Cahard, Desire Lucas, Abel Faivre, C. Cleandre, Paul Maurou, Lucien Metivet, L. Monod, Maruice Neumont, Georges Redon, L. Vallet & A. Willette. Lithography was invented in the 1790s by Alois Senefelder in Germany but, over the next century, became the domain of commercial and scientific printers. The French treatise of 1893 encouraged artists to return to the medium and the author, Duchatel's illustrated text describes how to work directly on the stone and use various transfer papers. Two years later, a major Paris exhibition of 1895, mounted to celebrate the centennial of the technique, and devoted a major section to prints by contemporary artists. The cover is by Maurice Neumont with the original lithograph also included within sans text. Text in French. Errata. Scattered light toning to margins of some images not affecting the portrait.
