About This Item
A special publication of the New Zealand Institute to record and photograph all outstanding examples of surviving Māori art and design as a record for posterity. The range of material encompassed is impressive: carved prows of war canoes and seafaring craft, architecture and habitations, weapons, implements of agriculture and handicraft, fish hooks and lines, musical instruments, mokomokai and so forth. Of special interest is the section of seven plates printed in black and red depicting rafter patterns.
The material is presented out of respect for an ancient culture during a period of rapid change and modernisation:'Maori Art has several characteristics which are clearly brought out after the comparison and examination in detail of numerous specimens, the most strongly marked of these being due to the application of ornament. It will be shown by abundant evidence that the Maori had a deep and true sense of the fitness of things, and never ornamented his weapons or implements in such a way as to interfere with their primary purpose and free use' (from the preface).
