A large-format, illustrated and fully documented cartobibliography of all the maps of Mediterranean regions included in the British Parliamentary Papers between 1801 and 1921. Unlike the British Parliamentary Papers themselves, which have been the subject of exhaustive research and numerous publications, the maps included in the Papers constituted until recently an uncharted territory. Thus Susan Gole's cartographic corpus is an original contribution as it brings to light hitherto unknown cartographic material: the maps of the Mediterranean regions, selected out of a total of two to three thousand maps included in the British Parliamentary Papers. The 330 illustrated entries, covering an area from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea, are listed in geographical order, each section being introduced by a brief note on the historical background to the area. Entries include the title, cartographer, scale, size and publisher of each map, as well as the full title, session and vol. no. of the paper to which the map was attached. Supplementary information about the map and its theme is provided in accompanying texts. The volume also comprises an extensive introduction on the British Parliamentary Papers and the maps attached to them, detailed indexes, as well as a list of the map number and corresponding transparency number in the British Library Reprographic Department, for those who might wish to order duplicate copies of the maps presented here. Susan Gole's book should prove of great interest not only to specialists in the field of cartography, but also to scholars of various disciplines, especially those dealing with aspects of diplomatic, military and economic history. It is also an edition that can be enjoyed by a wider readership, as it vividly depicts the changes in the Mediterranean world that occurred in the 19th century and to a large extent prefigured 20th-century developments in the area.
