Mardi, (the Polynesian word meaning "the world") is Melville's philosophical novel recounting a voyage through fictional South Sea islands; it was a precursor to Moby Dick. This was first published in London, printed by Richard Bentley the same year. Two vols, sml 8vo, xii, 365pp; xii, 387pp, ads (8). Original blind stamped plum cloth, gilt title to spines, publishers gilt logo at base of spine. Spines & covers sunned to brown, spine tips chipped. Internally, small owner initial stamps at ffep, some light foxing early. Notations of an early owner inside the cover of volume one tracking the value from 1927 to 1932 at booksellers such as Goodspeed, Stone, Dawson and C.T. Johnson, from $20 - $225.
