About This Item

London: Quartet Books, 1992. First edition thus. Hardcover. Fine/fine. First printing of the first edition in English translation from the German. Translated by John Hunt. A fine, fresh, unused copy in equally fine dust jacket. Hardcover. 416 pp. with discgraphy, bibliography, index. Illustrated with photographs. Incisive and engaing study of operatic star Maria Callas that examines her important contibutions to 20th century opera. Rather than delving into Callas's often described temprament, slimming cure, cancellations, Onassis affair (all are here relegated to their rightful place as mere incidentals), the biographer focuses instead on the qualities that made Callas an interpreter of the front rank. He analyses with searching insight the wealth of recorded documentation from official and unofficial sources and quotes from authorities and eyewitnesses such as John Ardoin, Andrew Porter, and Henry Wisneski. Special attention is paid to the men who helped mold her state and studio performances--Visconti, Zeffereiil, Legge and the like.
