About This Item
London: Cassell, 1890. First Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Important children's book that was the first of its kind, the prototype for those multiple-choice books for children that allow them to direct the story and choose their own endings. In the Preface, author F. Bennett states: 'You will find in this book (which is quite unlike, and far superior to, every other book heretofore written) four pages marked "Page 1," then four pages marked "Page 2," then four pages marked "Page 3," and so on to the end. You may read any of the pages marked 1, then any of those marked 2, then any marked 3, till you come to the conclusion of the story in page 8.' Blue cloth printed with an illus. of a Jack and Jill story and titled in gilt. Slight forward lean to boards. Cloth lightly soiled with wear to edges, corners and spine tips. Contents clean with offsetting to front and back endpapers but without bookplates, inscriptions, foxing or other markings. A good copy of this scarce and important children's work: 'The Marvellous Budget Being 65536 Stories of Jack and Jill'. 71 pp with b/w illustrations throughout + 16 pp publisher's catalogue. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed-for, and insured.
