About This Item

N.d.: K.T. Boland, 1901. First Edition. Octavo (24cm); dark green publisher's cloth, decoratively stamped in blind and gilt; 448pp.,frontis.,64 plates. Minor soiling, scuffs and wear throughout; spine heel and crown pushed; gilt faded; dust-soiling to textblock edges; ownership inscription on ffep; Very Good or better, sound.

Intended as a companion for women at all stages of her adult life, this volume contains medical information and practical advice for "mysterious and complex matters" relating to courtship, marriage, "pre-natal influence", childbirth and rearing, personal beauty, and "diseases peculiar to women", accompanied by b/w plate diagrams and illustrations, plus sixteen colorplates. Also includes home remedies and sickroom recipes, plus a glossary of terms. Published in 1901, the information within is very much a product of its time but may be viewed as a fascinating glimpse of life in the "good old days" of corsets, consumption, and the seemingly constant menace of constipation.
