About This Item

Macmillan Press Ltd, 2000. First Edition Thus First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Hardcover in unclipped dust jacket which is clean and bright with minimal rubbing to edges and no chips or tears. Black boards clean, square and sharp. Contents clean, tight and white without bookplates, inscriptions, foxing or other markings. ix, 226 pp; b/w ills. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Autobiography of Matheus Miller, a seventeenth century merchant in the German Imperial city of Augsbug. His story tells of his struggle to establish himself within a sharply critical family and a highly conservative community and in it he reveals his hopes and fears, his expectations and experiences, his values and actions. Miller created not only a window on early modern Europe but a mirror for the history of it. He exposed the workings of such global institutions as patriarchy, hierarchy, office, honour, community, friendship and confession in his own life and the shortcomings of modern theories and interpretations of them. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
