A long poem in which the poet contemplates the significance of of the process of naming places (Lake Matoaka) and people (Indian princess named Matoaka at birth, called Pocahontas by John Smith, renamed Rebecca when baptised). Amy Clampitt (1920-1994) was an American poet commissioned by the College of William and Mary to write this tercentenary poem. She had previously been a writer-in-residence at the College and was a 1992 MacArthur Prize Fellow. The book is SIGNED by Clampitt, inscribed by her to a Williamsburg, Virginia resident, and dated February 8, 1993. The staple-bound chapbook is clean, bright, and tight, with short crease lines at the staples.. SIGNED. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good+. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.
