These are the original first edition volumes of MATTHEW ARNOLD - THE CRITICAL HERITAGE SERIES as published in London. The first volume THE POETRY, edited by Carl Dawson, was published in 1973, with 466 pages, index and bibliography. The rare second volume, THE PROSE WRITINGS, edited by Carl Dawson and John Pfordresher, was published in 1979 at 458 pages, including index and bibliography and chronology. Both volumes are in fine condition, like new, in their original fine condition dust jackets. No Victorian critic had a greater impact on English and American literary attitudes then Matthew Arnold, and these companion volumes present a wide range of responses, from praise and admiration to replies, rebuttals and censure, all which greeted Arnold during his lifetime. Most of the articles here presented were published from the mid 1800's to the turn of the next century. Both volumes feature introductory essays by the editors, .
