This volume contains a detailed exploration of the early life and career of Max Ernst (1891-1976), covering the years 1912 to 1927, a time of great social upheaval and intellectual activity in Europe. This period includes Ernst's early and important contributions to Expressionism(1912-19), his breakthrough achievements of Dada (1912-24) and some of his early Surrealist pieces (1924-27). The book was published to accompany the exhibition organised by The Menil Collection, Houston which commenced at the Museum of Modern Art, New York from March 14 to May 2, 1993 and then toured to the Menil Collection, Houston and the Art Institute of Chicago..
