About This Item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1907. First Edition. Cloth and pictorial boards. Very Good/None. Louis D. Fancher. 12mo (7 1/8" x 5"), green backstrip and pictorial boards depicting a Art Nouveau bearded old man / Methuselah, illustrated with frontispiece and three full-page plates and decorative pages by Louis D. Fancher, Introduction by the humorist Burgess (19pp), 108 decorative pages by Fancher with Ra-wings on top and two Egyptian lightly clad women flanking each page. Frank Gelett Burgess (1866 - 1951) was an artist, art critic, poet, author and humorist. An important figure in the San Francisco Bay Area literary renaissance of the 1890s, particularly through his iconoclastic little magazine, The Lark, he is best known as a writer of nonsense verse.

These Maxims are light-hearted spoofs and questionable "biblical" advice about women presented in an attractive format.

Very Good Condition overall. Tight, clean copy with unfoxed plates and light wear to boards. Thin scrape on front cover by Methuselah's cheek and slight bumping to corners. Lacks dust jacket.
