Educated in a number of disciplines in Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Heidelberg, and Freiburg, Kahler came to the United States in 1938 and became a U.S. citizen in 1944. He lived most of hs years at Princeton. His wide circle of friends, dubbed the "Kahler-Kreis" by Charles Bell, included Albert Einstein, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Broch. this book, first published in 1943, was Kahler's attempt to conceive of an understanding of the world that transcended the horrors of what his generation lived through.
