About This Item

Captetown: Juta and Company Limited, 1956. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. The scarce first edition of this ethnographical work on the medicine and magic of the Mashona in Africa, in the vanishingly scarce dust wrapper. An illuminating ethnographical work on the medicine and magic practices of the people of Mashonaland, located in northern Zimbabwe. Including chapters on the tribal practices of the Mhondoro, the witch Muroi, the ancestral spirit Mudzimu, the Nganga (doctor), and more. Written by Michael Gelfand and including a foreword by Sir Robert Tredgold. The scarce first edition of this work, enclosed in the vanishingly scarce original dust wrapper. Illustrated with twenty-five plates, collated and complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, lovely, with just a touch of shelf wear. Original unclipped dust wrapper is smart, with some edgewear and fading to the backstrip. A few closed tears to the extremities of the wrap, with tape repairs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
