Overall a very nice copy of this work.. This beautiful uncoloured aquatint is plate one of a series of four fox-hunting prints produced by S & I Fuller, at the Sporting Gallery, known as the "Leicestershire Covers." by Thomas Sutherland (1785-1838) after Henry Thomas Alken. Dated March 1824. aquatint is 111/2" x 30" the sheet is 16" x 34". NB. We also have Plate Four for sale. ALKEN, Henry (1785 - 1851) was from a family of sporting artists, signing his early work 'Ben Tally Ho'. A keen sportsman he gave an authentic feel to his hunting prints and pictures. He became widely known for his sporting prints and pictures as well as his watercolour hunting, coaching and shooting scenes.

Frankfurt: A.M. Mallet, 1719. The mounts have very slight bumping, but are in good, clean condition. The plates are good impressions, and cleanly mounted. Plate 71 has a slight crease to the right edge, with a "crack" of loss of ink. This would seem to have occurred at the time of printing. Overall in very nice condition. . A pair of copper engravings of the heavens. The first shows Three globes are floating in the sky, an active seaside scene across the bottom including boats, an old coastal village scene, etc. The globes show the Anteciens, the Perieciens and the Antipodes. These are two small to have been of use to a navigator, and were purely decorative. This is numbered plate 49 to the corner. The second, labeled plate 71 shows a pastoral scene, above which there is a disc showing the sun and the astrological symbols. These were issued by A.M. Raimond in an attempt to keep her acting and writing careers separate. Covers lightly rubbed, spine very slightly faded. Prelims are moderately foxed, page edges also. Otherwise a good copy.

Paris: Béchet jeune, 1832. Half leather with marbled boards. Gilt titles to the spine. The hinges of the spine have a little cracking, but are still holding well. Marbled end papers. This is a "First Thus" and seems to be an expanded edition. Originally published by Bechet Jeune between 1823-26, this edition was published in 1832. In addition to the 21 numbered plates, there are 5 marked biz, plus engraved title, so a total of 27 plates. 7 of the plates are hand coloured. Curiously, every copy I have seen online has 7 hand coloured plates, presumably the same ones. The plates depict poisonous snakes, plants, fungi etc. Most of the pages are in very good condition. The title has a touch of darkening and staining to the corners. The first 12 plates have light staining (water?) to the spine edge, not affecting engraving. Tab 2 has loss to the edge (not affecting plate). 3 of the coloured engravings of mushrooms have had closed tears repaired to the rear with archival tape. Not particularly…
