About This Item
NY: Featherstone Press, 1980 NY: Featherstone Press, (1980.) 1st edition. Signed & inscribed by the author to Jim Brown (1936-2023), the great American football player, actor, and civil rights activist. The inscription reads, in part: “to Jim Brown / A man who brought / a lot of inspirational / moments into the lives / of so many people.” A collection of 11 short stories by Larry Melford, an African-American writer from Brooklyn. The stories include “Jim Brown, What You Say?” about an inspiring meeting between a down-on-his-luck stadium vendor and Jim Brown at an NFL game between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers. Melford was himself a standout football player in high school, and he started writing in 1958 while serving the US Air Force. He graduated from Fordham and studied at Columbia under John Olliver Killens, an important figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s. 121 pp. 8vo clothbound hardcover. Light wear and fading of the jacket, but VG+ overall. Clean and securely bound. A nice copy of an uncommon book, with a unique association to Jim Brown
