About This Item

[Megalo (761 - ca. 818 A.D.) - The Ignored Byzantine Saint]

In greek with summaries in english and french. Hard cover, 24 cm, 208 pp. Megalo, the second daughter of patrician Leo, was born in Constantinople in 761 A.D. In 777, she married Theophanes, the son of the general Isaacius. It was a wedding of interest for two known and wealthy families, which maintained special ties with the iconoclastic emperors of the Isaurian dynasty. Theophanes dreamed of becoming a monk, but he did not dare to conflict with the iconoclastic family environment and the throne. In 780, after the death of his parents and the parents of Megalo, Theophanes benefiting from the rise to the throne of iconophil Irene of Athens, forced Megalo to become a nun, while he also became a monk. Megalo, having no other choice, really embraced the monastic ideal; miraculous acts attributed to her, while Theophanes was still a nameless monk. Feeling strong enough, she decided to become the bad conscience of her former husband. He left the monastery to move successively to the island Kalonymos and then to Bithynia, following the movements of Theophanes. But Theophanes subsequently became famous for his attitude during the second iconoclastic controversy, his conviction and finally his death in 818 in Samothrace, where he was exiled. As a result the Eastern Orthodox Church proclaimed Theophanes as a Saint. Megalo, however, the real Saint, was forgotten and died as an insignifant nun, probably in Constantinople between 818 and 822. This book is a detailed biography of Megalo, the "ignored beatified".
