Dust jacket has wrinkling, chipping, crease, and some tears on the edges and corenrs, some scattered stains, scratches, and rubbing, tanning, and shelf wear. Book lighlty cocked, some bumped corners and cover edgewear, old price label adhered on the front fixed endpaper, some stains on the page edges, light discoloration and shelf wear. This evocative, ironic, and scintillating fiction has its narrator-hero a man born during the Great War of 1914-18 that destroyed the Austro-Hunarian Empire, in which his aristocratic family had once found its perfect comfort and context. Gregor von Rezzori, born Gregor Arnulph Hilarius d'Arezzo, was an Austrian-born, Romanian, German-language novelist, memoirist, screenwriter and author of radio plays, as well as an actor, journalist, visual artist, art critic and art collector. He was fluent in German, Romanian, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian, Yiddish, French, and English; during his life, von Rezzori was successively a citizen of Austria-Hungary, Romania, and the Soviet Union, before becoming a stateless person and spending his final years as a citizen of Austria. Synopsis

Gregor von Rezzori (1914—1998) studied at the University of Vienna and for a time lived in Bucharest. In Germany, after World War II, he became active as a writer and in radio broadcasting and filmmaking activities. American readers first discovered is writing in English with the appearance of his story, "Troth," in The New Yorker . Mr. Rezzori's books include Tales from Maghrebinia, Oedipus Triumphs at Stalingrad, The Hussar, The Snows of Yesteryear, The Death of My Brother Abel , and Anecdotage . He lived with his wife in a village near Florence, Italy until his death. Deborah Eisenberg is the author of three collections of short stories and the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, the Rea Award, and three O. Henry Awards. She lives in New York City.
