About This Item

London: William Miller and James Carpenter, 1811. Hardcover. Very Good-. 'A New Edition...Illustrated with Sixty-Four Portraits Engraved by Edward Scriven, &c.': this extraordinary copy has the sixty-four portraits plus eighty more and is in a very beautiful but unidentified fine binding stamped "EXTRA ILLUSTRATED" on the spines; this is Horace Walpole's translation with annotations by Sir Walter Scott, though neither is identified. Two volume set, 8vos, bound in rich red leather, probably levant, with elaborate devices on spine, double rules on covers, pale red linen endpapers with intricate dentelles, and top edges gilt. The text and all plates are clean; plates bound in include all those which belong with this edition, they are mostly dated 1810 and many are presented in hexagonal frames, plus probably all of the portraits from the earlier illustrated edition of 1793 (dated 1792 or 1793, published by E.& S. Harding, many also engraved by them or by I.J. Van den Berghe, there should be seventy-six of them), plus several others from sources we have not identified; all illustrations which are not captioned are identified (as to person) on the back; each plate has penciled binder's instructions on the back. Overall, vg- (weak joints, leather on joints cracked and worn; spines and edges of boards darkened; bottom edges of boards heavily worn and scraped; spine ends bumped and worn; spine heads chipped; corners worn to boards; gilt on top edges discolored in middle, probably stained; white marks and scrape to leather on side edge of rear board of vI; white mark on front board of vII; scrape to side edge of vII, caused dent to side edges of pp323-55; pages and plates toning); 262pp and 356pp. An extraordinary gallery of fascinating lords and ladies, in the book which describes their often reprehensible exploits most entertainingly.
