Providence: B.T. Albro - Printer, 1839. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Volume One: Memoirs of Elleanor Eldridge, Second Edition, 1940. The first edition was 1838 and was reprinted in 1940 and 1942. Green cloth spine, marbled boards, 128 pages. Previous owners names on front pastedown and name stamp on front flyleaf. Spine label partially missing but most of Elleanor Eldridge still visible. Gutters are sound and pages remarkably clean with moderate foxing, mostly in the first portion of the book. Volume Two: Elleanor's Second Book, 1839. My research has most references to this very scarce book stating that it was printed in 1842, 1847 or even later. Brown cloth spine with teal boards, 128 pages. Book has light edgewear and the same name stamp as the previous volume. The pages are very clean and complete. "Ellen's 2d Book" is printed on the spine label. Elleanor Eldridge (1785-1845) was of African American and Native American heritage. She had real estate holdings including her home which she lost due to a prolonged sickness. These books were written by Francis Harriet Whipple Green McDougal to raise money to repurchase Elleanor's property. The books were successful and Elleanor was able to repurchase her home. Books are protected in custom cut clear mylar covers. All books are carefully wrapped and shipped in a box. .
