Top edge of pages have been cut and gilded, the others are untrimmed. Pages a bit marked and rubbed but overall a very good example. The original front wrapper has some small areas of loss to the edges and corners and has been professionally laid down. Bound in modern half red crushed morocco by C. Walters. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Compartments lettered in gilt. Boards with dark red cloth. Burgundy endpapers. Previous owners bookplate (Douglas Peter Crossman, Earl Stonham) on front pastedown endpaper. Mild edgewear and a few short, closed tears to some volumes. Overall, a bright and attractive set. Near Fine. Casanova --so complete is his fame that his name is a pronoun, a noun and a verb. Casanova's fame, however, rests securely on his own shoulders (well, perhaps lower), for it is his autobiography which made him a legend. Venice, in the 18th century, was a part of the European Grand Tour and Venetian tourism specialized in "pleasure" which included everything from theater to the open pursuit of social vices. The son of professional entertainers, Casanova soon discovered that a career as a lawyer was not for him and thus began a life-long adventure affronting "common decency". St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
