First published in France in 1771, L'AN DEUX MILLE QUATRE CENT QUARANTE, translated from the French by W. H. Hooper. 12mo, approximately 170 x 95 mm, 6½ x 3¾ inches, pages: [i-v], vi-viii, [1]-224; [4], [1]-248, first free endpaper counted in the collation, Contents, advert and Errata bound out of order after title page (1 leaf, [ix-x], the catchword on viii is Con, the digital copy listed in WorldCat under Victoria and Albert Museum" collates as our copy, the only collation we could find), bound in contemporary quarter roan, marbled boards, plain endpapers. Spines slightly rubbed and darkened, 3 small repairs to blank side of inner margin to title page of Volume 1, title pages a little dusty with some minor pale stains, last page of Volume 1 with slight stain to inner margin, occasional pale spot to text, a very good clean set. See: I. F. Clarke, Tale of the Future, page 2, " The first utopia of the future in which the idea of progress is dominant, The World is united in the brotherhood of man; France has a constitutional monarchy; Deism is the true religion; canals and other technological advances have improved life for all". The work was banned in France and Spain and put on the Inquisition's list of forbidden books.
