About This Item

Detroit: Fire Department of City of Detroit. Good. 1856. Hardcover. James Adam Van Dyke (1813-1855) came to Detroit in 1834, was an attorney, a working fireman, and elected the 21st Mayor of Detroit in 1847. This volume of memorial addresses--including one to the firemen of Detroit by James Van Dyke relating the history of the fire department--was published by the Fire Department for Private Circulation, probably in a small edition. Van Dyke was also the prosecuting attorney in the railroad conspiracy case involving citizens in Jackson Co. , Michigan who took on the the Michigan Central Rail Road in 1851. Signed by William Van Dyke on front end paper (not certain what the family relation is to the subject of the book). There is an obituary a clipping laid in regarding the death of Frank Van Dyke, James Van Dyke's grandson. Some chapters include a Eulogy by D. Bethune Duffield, a biography of Van Dyke which has no attribution, correspondence received relating to Van Dyke, a chapter on Extracts from the Arguments by Van Dyke in the railroad conspiracy case, etc. A scarce Detroit imprint with interesting historical content. Original publisher's brown blind stamped cloth with gilt cover lettering; the spine has been repaired with library tape. The pages are clean and bright, old clipping laid in and tanning where it lies laid in front end paper. Wear to cloth covers at the bottom edges and corner tips. Ref: Streeter 1137 . ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 124 pages .
