About This Item

1682 1ed Whitlocke Memorials of England Civil War Charles I Cromwell FOLIO RARE

Bulstrode Whitlocke's "Memorials of the English Affairs" is a rare, late 17th-century account of the political events that occurred in England during the reigns of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and Charles II. The title itself claims that to book includes military and civil interests, as well as secrets of the royal cabinet; however, this book is also a supreme source on the 'Puritan Revolution' or English Civil War.

Found within its contents are detailed descriptions of the events leading up to, during, and after the English Civil Wars, all from the Parliamentary perspective. Recorded are various speeches and events surrounding the conflict between Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and the English government. Among these events include a record of the trial and execution of Charles I, the establishment of Oliver Cromwell as Lord Protector, and the 1660 restoration of the monarchy in Charles II.

Also referenced are the careers of Thomas Fairfax, John Lambert, and William Penn of the Quakers.
