Edited with an introduction by Margaret Fisher Dalrymple Fitzpatrick was one of the ambitious British merchants who swarmed into the lower Mississippi River Valley during the second half of the 18th century to make their fortunes on the frontier. He set up business in New Orleans and later, when exiled from Louisiana, settled at Manchac, a small British settlement on the east side of the Mississippi River just above the boudary of the Spanish Colony, and established himself there as a trader and planter .
