About This Item

London: Chatto and Windus, 1949. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 10" by 8". Muirhead Bone. A fascinating memoir of Captain and novelist Sir Captain David William Bone. Limited edition of one hundred and sixty copies of which this is number twenty one. Signed by the author to colophon, with original etching of the author, signed in pencil by artist and brother, Muirhead Bone. Illustrated throughout, with fourteen full page monochrome plates, sixteen headpieces and one tailpiece. David William Bone was both a successful sea captain and novelist, and wrote a number of works detailing his time fighting during the First and Second World War. Merchantman Rearmed is based around his experiences during the Second World War, including his participation in Operation Husky, in which the Allies took the island of Sicily from Axis power. He retired from active duty in 1946. In a quarter blue morocco binding with blue cloth boards. Externally very smart, with some slight rubbing to the extremities. A few marks to the boards. Spine is sunned. Slight offsetting to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with just the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good Indeed
