Hardback with DJ. Henry Roth (1906 1995) was an American novelist and short story writer who found long-deserved recognition after his 1934 work, Call It Sleep, a classic novel reflecting the lives of Jewish immigrants on the lower east side in the early part of the twentieth century, was reissued in paperback in 1964. Mercy of a Rude Stream tells the story of Ira Stigman, an immigrant boy, suffers a cruel Americanization process from 1914 through 1921 in a novel that deals with themes of Prohibition, anti-Semitism, racism, and the violence of sexuality. The title comes from a Shakespearean quotation which characterizes life as a 'tumultuous rude stream'.
